Tennessee Valley

The Human Side of Tragedy

Alexandra and the Expedition Blue Planet Crew headed to the Tennessee Valley to investigate the social and environmental impacts of one of America's worst energy disasters: the TVA Kingston Fossil Plant coal fly ash slurry spill. The largest fly ash spill in Unites States history, the catastrophic event forced many from their homes and utterly devastated the local ecosystem. To make the situation worse, the surge continued to flow from the Tennessee River into two surrounding tributaries, the Emory River and Clinch River, wiping out everything in its path. In the aftermath of this horrific tragedy, Expedition Blue Planet headed to ground zero to talk to local residents and experts about the dangers inherent in America's obsession with coal.
