DASANI
We’d like to extend a special “thank you” to Coca-Cola and DASANI for generously serving as the presenting sponsor of Expedition: Blue Planet. Without the support of DASANI, telling the story of our Blue Planet through interviews, blogs, video, podcasts and social media exchanges would not be possible.
In preparing for Expedition: Blue Planet, we determined to only accept funding from companies and brands who are actively engaged in making a positive difference in water issues while also demonstrating an active and ongoing commitment to meaningful and innovative product stewardship. We gathered an Advisory Board of some of the best and brightest experts on environmental and water issues to assist us in staying true to our message and principals while raising the funds necessary to take on a project as ambitious as Expedition: Blue Planet.
We are proud to partner with Coca-Cola and DASANI and commend them for demonstrating meaningful and measurable commitment to sustainability and corporate leadership in water conservation, recycling, and product stewardship.
--Expedition: Blue Planet
DASANI shares the Blue Legacy and Expedition: Blue Planet passion for water conservation and stewardship. As a hydration company DASANI recognizes that water is a basic human need and conservation of this precious resource is a first-order priority.
Coca-Cola and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) are working together to conserve some of the world’s most important freshwater resources, including many spots on the Expedition: Blue Planet itinerary.
- With the WWF, Coca-Cola is supporting conservation projects on the Yangtze, Mekong, Danube, Rio Grande/Rio Bravo, Lakes Niassa and Chiuta, the Mesoamerican Reef catchments, and the rivers and streams in the southeastern region of the United States.
- Coca-Cola North America’s partnership with Southeast Rivers & Streams has created opportunities for its three largest bottlers work together to support watershed conservation and reintroduction of native aquatic species in the Cumberland, Mobile and Tennessee River Basins.
- Coca-Cola also works to ensure that communities have access to safe potable drinking water through support for Global Water Challenge; lobbying on behalf of appropriations for Water for the Poor Act; support for Community Water Partnerships.
- As part of its global water stewardship commitment, Coca-Cola has set a goal to replace every drop of water used in its beverages and production. This means continually working to improve water use efficiency in operations, recycling water used for manufacturing processes so it can be returned safely to the environment, and replenishing water in communities and ecosystems through locally relevant projects.
Coca-Cola and DASANI are taking responsibility for packaging placed in the market by working to ensure that bottles (both DASANI and all Coca-Cola brands) and cans are recycled and reused.
- Coca-Cola just opened the world’s largest bottle-to-bottle recycling plant in Spartanburg, SC capable of producing 100 million pounds of recycled PET for use in its bottles.
- This plant is part of a continuing effort by Coca-Cola to support recycling in key markets and increase access to recycled content to put back into bottles.
- Coca-Cola invested more than $60 million to support recycling infrastructure and recycling programs in the US including the Spartanburg recycling plant as well as:
- Coca-Cola Recycling (CCR)—a company-owned recycling business. CCR creates innovative collection programs at colleges and universities, office buildings and retail centers, as well as major sporting events, music festivals and other large scale events to drive recycling behavior among consumers.
- RecycleBank. Coca-Cola is the official beverage sponsor of this innovative curbside collection program. RecycleBank dramatically increases household recycling rates by offering incentives to consumers.
- Bin grant recycling program and the RecycleMania campus recycling program
- Recycled PET merchandise program
- Coca-Cola Recycling (CCR)—a company-owned recycling business. CCR creates innovative collection programs at colleges and universities, office buildings and retail centers, as well as major sporting events, music festivals and other large scale events to drive recycling behavior among consumers.
The DASANI package has been specifically designed with the environment in mind.
- The DASANI bottle features a light blue color specifically designed to be compatible with recycling and has a cap that can be recycled.
- DASANI has lightweighted packaging by 30 percent since its inception and introduced a short-cap enclosure across all Coca-Cola sparkling and still brands, reducing plastic use by 5%.
- In 2008 Coca-Cola introduced a 12.8 gram, 500 ml DASANI bottle, with a short height closure resulting in an additional 10% plastic reduction since 2007.
We encourage you to join us in researching the products and services you consume and join us in doing business with companies and brands that invest in research, technology, and projects that benefit our environment.
