Today was just plain fun. And gorgeous. After days of rain, I have to admit it was a joy to see blue sky scrambling its way out from behind the abundant clouds. Even the birds seemed in a celebratory mood, chirping with extra glee.

Hippos moo like cows in the river that flows just outside the rooms, yawning their massive jaws. We’ve been told that they kill more people in Botswana than any other wild animal. They’re aggressive and surprisingly quick given their girth.

When we meet at dawn for breakfast, Ben and Ali inform us that a small herd of elephants lingering around their tent served as their alarm clock. “You know you’re in Africa when!” we joke once more.

Writing about the Okavango Delta, it is tempting to present a package of clichés wrapped in hyperbole and tied up with a bow of abundant adjectives: “The most magnificent place on Earth!”, “A pristine wilderness, such as hardly exists anymore on our planet!”, “A journey back to the dawn of time!”

At Home in the Okavango

What a delight to awaken this morning to a view of water, a placid 10-meter stretch of the Okavango Delta, green reeds leading up to the edge, brush and trees extending in every direction all the way to the flat horizon. Gurgles, screeches, whistles, and croaks popping out from birds and frogs thick around our wilderness lodge create a symphony. It feels like awakening from a dream to a dream.
