Illuminating the impact of competing interests; including wildlife, diamond mines, tourism, cattle industry, and nearby villages on the miraculous freshwater refuge the Okavango wetland provides. From a global perspective, to gain insight into how various parties, both human and animal, individual and industrial, can balance their needs for water in a world where this resource is rapidly shrinking.

Botswana

Overview

Often called the 'Cradle of Life' for its role in the origin of the human species, the Okavango in Botswana is the largest inland delta on Earth. Renowned for its diverse wildlife, which includes zebras, antelope, elephants, and Cape buffalo, the Delta is a unique ecosystem, drawing water from thousands of miles away through the desert sands to a veritable oasis. During the dry season, animals migrate from the nearby Kalahari Desert, causing the wildlife population supported by the delta to climb some tenfold.

Okavango Delta: Day 8

Women and Water

Today was just plain fun. And gorgeous. After days of rain, I have to admit it was a joy to see blue sky scrambling its way out from behind the abundant clouds. Even the birds seemed in a celebratory mood, chirping with extra glee.

Three Countries, One River

We finally have an opportunity this morning to sleep in, and I feel spoiled by waking after sunrise. Hippos moo like cows in the river that flows just outside the rooms, yawning their massive jaws. We’ve been told that they kill more people in Botswana than any other wild animal. They’re aggressive and surprisingly quick given their girth.

Okavango Delta: Day 6

Let it Rain

The national motto of Botswana is “Let the rains come!” Today pulafalls in abundance, solemn shadows sweeping across the grasslands.

Okavango Delta: Day 5

Mokoro Magic

When we meet at dawn for breakfast, Ben and Ali inform us that a small herd of elephants lingering around their tent served as their alarm clock. “You know you’re in Africa when!” we joke once more.

Okavango Delta: Day 3

Wild Life

Writing about the Okavango Delta, it is tempting to present a package of clichés wrapped in hyperbole and tied up with a bow of abundant adjectives: “The most magnificent place on Earth!”, “A pristine wilderness, such as hardly exists anymore on our planet!”, “A journey back to the dawn of time!”

Okavango Delta: Day 2

At Home in the Okavango

What a delight to awaken this morning to a view of water, a placid 10-meter stretch of the Okavango Delta, green reeds leading up to the edge, brush and trees extending in every direction all the way to the flat horizon. Gurgles, screeches, whistles, and croaks popping out from birds and frogs thick around our wilderness lodge create a symphony. It feels like awakening from a dream to a dream.
